Unfortunately, that doesnt stop interviewers from asking the question.Consider the typical interview scenarioThe interviewer wants to learn the weaknesses of an applicant and asks, What are your weaknesses?The candidate attempts to dodge the question by providing a generic weakness that isnt necessarily a weakness at all.The interviewer learns nothing.Valuable interview time is wasted.Despite this, it is amazing how many otherwise smart interviewers still think its a good idea to pursue this lin e of questioning. Its even more amazing to hear how many people respond by describing themselves as perfectionists.A quick glance at the current state of our world is enough to realize that there arent nearly as many perfectionists as people who claim to be. Even if it happens to be true in your case, do not, under any circumstances, describe yourself as a perfectionist unless you are trying to turn the interviewer off completely.So, whats the solution? While it might seem odd to start with what interviewers can do to ask more thought-provoking questions, lets start there anyway. It actually reveals a more effective way for candidates to respond no matter how the question is phrased.A more effective approach The spirit of the weakness question is a good one in the sense that every one of us has room for improvement. Unfortunately, if we were all completely candid about the areas in which we need improvement, most of us probably wouldnt have jobs. Theres something about saying a we akness out loud that makes it seem worse than it actually is.On the other hand, canned answers like perfectionism and chocolate dont do much to further the conversation either. For these reasons, I use a different approach.As an interviewer, rather than asking about weaknesses, I ask the following questionSomeone who doesnt know you well doesnt like you. What are five adjectives he or she might use to describe you?This question works for two primary reasons. First, it is a universell menschenwrdig phenomenon that there will always be people who dont know us well and, for whatever reason, dont particularly like us. Second, you cant fake your way through this question. As it happens, people are often so caught off-guard by the question that they find themselves compelled to answer candidly. For example, on two occasions, I had candidates one man and one woman describe themselves as mean-spirited. The more I probed, the more I realized it was probably an accurate self-assessment.Apar t from this scenario, there are very few responses that would ultimately contribute to a candidate being eliminated because the five adjectives are only part of the answer. The only other noteworthy example would be the candidates who have so little self-awareness that they cant come up with a single adjective others might use to describe them. In most cases though, the real insight comes not from the five adjectives, but from the follow up questionNow, lets imagine you are on a team with a new person at the company. You notice theres some spannung between the two of you. You also realize that this person would probably describe you as insert their list of 5 adjectives. How would you handle the situation? From a candidates perspective, the real objective is to provide a meaningful and believable area of improvement.Using this approach as a candidateWhen you hear the weakness question and you will answer the adjective and follow-up questions above instead. To show how this works, I ll demonstrate the technique using a few of the adjectives people who dont know me well might use to describe me. The important point here is to take this one step further and say what you are doing to improve. For example, I would saySometimes people who dont know me particularly well get the wrong impression and see me as intense, angry and sometimes even aloof. Even though people who know me well would never use those words to describe me, I know I can come across that way at times. For this reason, I am taking steps to be seen as more kind and approachable like being the person who smiles and says hello to strangers.At that point, I would smile at the interviewer and sayAs someone who grew up in downtown Chicago, smiling at complete strangers isnt something I do naturally, but Im working on it.This approach works well for a few important reasons. First, every word of it is true. Second, it communicates honesty, self-awareness and a commitment to self-improvement. Better still, it often has the unintended consequence of creating a connection with the interviewer.On more than a few occasions, Ive had interviewers look at me with a somewhat surprised expression and say, I have the exact same experience. People always tell me I look angry even when Im not. Another woman smiled and said, My husband is the same way. In each case, we connected in the moment as fellow human beings. That, by the way, is something that would be highly improbable the way most people approach the weakness question. Somehow, I cant picture an interviewer hearing about your perfectionist tendencies and excitedly exclaiming, Me tooKeep this in mind the next time you are asked about your weaknesses. Its a great way to be honest and compelling without damning yourself to a life of unemployment.

And then the ultimate lum p of coal, another round of layoffs, which I was included in.After the dreaded sit down with my manager and some HR rep, it was all a blur.But in an odd way at that moment, stress and panic did not set in.I was almost euphoric, giddy, and excited that this happened because I was just sick of the company and the work.But, later that day, everything hit me.A flood of various negative emotions, stress, and worry about what I was going to do.I didnt have much saved, I was living on my own with bills andstudent loans to pay. Fortunately, I did get severance pay that would last me until February, but after that, I needed a way to make money.I would not find a new full-time gig for almost 9 monthsI stayed a float with that side gig I mentioned earlier and got another part-time gig with a startup.However, I like to call my layoff a divine intervention in both career and my personal finances, heres why.The divine career interventionThe reason I call my layoff a divine career intervention, wa s because I had no defined career or path.I started in email marketing for the company I was laid off from, then did some graphic stuff, then went to photo management and some mobile app building.My resume was just a bunch of randomness and I only worked in one place.But this forced me to learn what I liked, focusing on fixing my career path (I pivoted to digital marketing), and improve my career worth.But getting laid off was also a financial motivator too.The divine financial interventionI never want to experience the panic or stress of not knowing how Im going to pay bills or be solely dependent on a job.Until getting laid off, I never actually put much thought into that.I wasnt concerned or really had a plan in place if something would happen.I was starting to think about this a few months before I was let go from my job, which I think was crucial in being a bit more prepared to get learning.But getting laid shifted my entire financial mindset too.Fear was certainly a motivating factor, but bettering my future was also a driving force.The way I thought about money, like saving, spending, and investing was more on my mind than ever before.Why Getting Laid Off Can Be the Motivation You NeedAt the time it wont feel like it or might be hard to envision how, but I truly believe it can (and does) if you approach it with a clear mentality.Of course, the stress of money and paying your bills is abigreason to be worried.But Im a firm believer that the hard times in life are the best lessons and times to take action.A moment of grief and emotions is certainly healthy, take a few days for yourself to process and come to terms. But pick yourself up and get to workHere are a few ways getting laid off was the motivator I needed and these may also apply to you if you face a layoff.Forces you out of your comfort zoneBeing laid off is an uncomfortable situation, but it forced me to take action and avoid future complacency.Although a bit scary because of the unknown, I thin k it helped me be better prepared for situations that might not always be sunshine and rainbows.Talking about careers, finding a job, learning how to manage my finances during this time, wasnt exactly comfortable topics.But, getting laid off did not leave me much choice but to jump right in.Can teach you how to be more prepared financiallyNot having much cash saved, with debt and bills to pay during a layoff was quite stressful.But it put me in a survival mode, which helped me approach finances differently.I started to understand the value of emergency funds, helped me become a better budgeter, and a better saver too.It teaches you how to trulymanage your moneymore effectively, which can stick with you well beyond your layoff period.Increases the value of multiple income streams and side hustlesYouve probably heard about the value ofmultiple streams of income, but not everyone has one outside of their day job.Being laid off can really prove the value of having another source of inco me through a side hustle.When you have another source or two outside of your 9-5, you have a financial buffer and you will probably feel a bit less stressed if a layoff happens.Getting laid off will potentially make you care more about multiple streams of income, work harder on side hustles, or fuel you to work more on your own projects.Since this happened to me, I always ensure I had 1-2 extra streams of income.Helps you appreciate more of what you do haveBeing laid off is a sucky situation and can feel like your world is falling apart.But, I also found it to be a great reflection period to appreciate what you do have in life.Look for the positives, even when you feel the negative energy around you.For me, I still had a place to live, had a supportive family, great relationship had started, and I had a side hustle that could help me make some money to stay afloat.So while I was nervous about losing my job and having no clear career direction, I found my mentality to become positive about the situation after some reflection.Final ThoughtsEveryone handles being laid off differently and your financial situation when this happens is also unique.But take this time to remove the negative energy and work on how this can actually better your life.My best tips for helping you analyze your lay off situation is to do the followingTake some time for yourself to gather thoughts and emotions.Take a day or two, or if you need a bit longer.Mental and emotional health will be crucial to creating a plan of action and help drive your attitude.Find things that are calming and fuel your mind with good energy.If you are low on funds and need to make money, look for part-time or a job that might not be in your career to get a steady paycheck.Apply for unemployment immediately, take odd side jobs for now, however you can legally make money.If you do have a bit of a financial buffer, put it to good use and work on your personal finances to ensure you arent overspending while looking for your next gig.Evaluate your career, what you like, dislike, and do some research to make changes if you think you need a new path.Its not always easy to switch careers or find something you are passionate about immediately, but spend time in this area.The internet can teach you plenty and has a lot of great resources for you to research.Put a plan together, whether thats giving your resume a boost, improving your knowledge (books, certifications, training, etc.)networking, finding a new career path, organizing your finances, or all the above.Write down your career and financial goals, figure out how you are going to get there.Talk to friends, colleagues, or family if you need some advice or help.Has getting laid off motivated you or have you thought about what youd do in this situation? University of Central Florida Takes Top Honors at HPVC East University of Central Florida Takes Top Honors at HPVC East The team from the University of Central Florida and their human powered vehicle, Knightrike, were the overall winners of the ASME Human Powered Vehicle Challenge East competition, which was held in Orlando, Fla., earlier this month. In a dramatic turn of events at the ASME Human Powered Vehicle Challenge East earlier this month, the student team from the University of Central Florida unseated perennial favorites Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and the Missouri University of Science Technology (Missouri ST) to become the overall winner of the competition.The teams from Rose-Hulman and Missouri ST, whose entries were plagued by mechanical problems, schliffed in second- and fifth-distribution policy overall, respectively, thus clearing the path for the host school the University of Central Florida and its entry Knightrike to cruise to victory as the overall winners of the three-day event, which took place April 11-13 at the universitys campus in Orlando, Fla. Cheryl, Franklin W. Olin Colleges entry in this years HPVC East, placed third overall. Thirty-two teams of ASME student members took part in the competition, which consisted of three races a mens and womens drag race and an endurance event as well as design and innovation evaluations. The University of Central Florida took first place in every category except design, where it came in second. Rose-Hulmans entry, Namazu, tipped over during the first HPVC East event, the womens speed event, for a 24th place finish. The team, which won the design category and was the runner-up in the innovation category, never fully recovered over the next two days, feinschliff fifth in the mens drag race and eighth in the endurance event. The University of Missouri-Kansas City placed second in the womens drag race event at HPVC East. Other notable teams at HPVC East included the University of Missouri-Kansas City, placing second in the womens drag race Union College, finishing second in the endurance event the University of Toronto, ranking third in both the mens speed and innovation categories and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, placing third in the endurance event. Several teams besides Rose-Hulman also faced mechanical challenges during the competition. Franklin W. Olin Colleges Cheryl, for instance, malfunctioned during the endurance event. The team still managed a third-place finish in the race, however. With her teammates running alongside of her and cheering her on, the teams driver pushed her vehicle the remainder of the course and over the finish line. The students received the events Team Spirit award for their efforts. ASME will hold another Human Powered Vehicle Challenge, the HPVC West, in San Jose, Calif., April 25-27. But what if you stretched the truth in the past should you admit to it now? Not necessarily. OKelly believes that the best time to correct inaccuracies is when you are looking for a new role. And allow yourself to start with a clean slate Make sure you change it in both your printed/electronic versions as well as in your online profiles on career sites.But what if your lie is much more substantial and you didnt really get that degree, those grades or that license? OKelly says its time to fess up because youre potentially putting the careers and reputation of others at risk. She said, You could be putting your employer at risk and you could be legally liable. That said, you will likely need to get started on your next job search this time using an accurate resume.So, what happens if you lied on your resume and arent sure if its egregious enough to bring up? You should probably research any information about your companys hiring requirements before mentioning it to HR.Whatever you do, dont tell your work wife and expect them to help you figure it out. That could be a bad idea since depending on your company policies, you might be sharing the guilt if you share the details. And you also might eventually break up with your best friend in the office and youve just given them a valuable piece of leverage over you.A few more tipsIf your lie welchesnt actually a lie, but rather a buffing of your skills, speak to HRHeather Q., who wants to keep her information private to protect her career, didnt even realize she had lied on her resume until she was at her new job for a few months. I thought I knew how to do something, so I added those skills to my resume. It was only after I realized the details involved that I worried that I might have lied on my resume.Heather ended up going to HR and explaining the situation. She then confessed to her boss. While it wasnt a pleasant situation initially, her boss ended up trusting her more because she realized that instead of propagating a lie Heather chose to expose my professional vulnerabilities in the past and show my boss how much my skillset had improved.Talk to a resume proSantiago R. reveals that when he first came to the states as an exchange student, his English was good but not great. Santiago tried to craft a resume on his own but realized that he wasnt necessarily telling the entire truth on his resume. As he became more confident with his career skills, he hired a resume professional to go over his professional claims with him.I knew I was good at my job, but I figured that if I was ever up for review, I needed to be sure I told the truth in the first place, Sant iago said.A resume pro was able to point out the trouble spots and eventually, Santiago confessed all to his boss.
